Bringing home the Christmas tree was a childhood expectation that always brought great delight.
Even in college one of my favorite memories was heading out into God’s beautiful creation with great friends. We were all bundled up for the cold. Laughter, agreement, searching, a saw, and transporting the perfect Christmas tree all played a part with special friends who are now scattered around the world.
When our children were born, we carried on the same tradition. Jesus is the reason for the season so we make a big deal of Christmas in our home. Decorations make this time of year extra special. It begins with finding the “perfect” tree.
Everyone would bundle up for the cold. A few simple hand tools were tucked away into the trunk. A roof rack was secured to the car. And a map to a nearby tree farm guided our journey.
Everyone spread out on the farm. It was a challenge for someone to find the perfect tree. With every announcement of discovery, the family gathered to evaluate the potential center of our family Christmas decorations.
When we had consensus and especially the approval of the women in our home, the cutting began. Someone had to shout, “Timber!” The tree thundered to the ground. We would all cheer.
Every family member would grab a limb. We lifted the prize together and marched back to the hut, paid our fee and loaded the perfect tree on to our car. Usually, the best tree farms gave away hot chocolate and we were more than happy to help them with their hospitality.
With the tree ready for in-house presentation I called for the family to make a clear path to the living room. Now warmed and revitalized everyone watched the entry. Posting the tree then met with many opinions on the best side of the tree to show in the house.
“Turn it to the right,” someone would say. “No, turn it completely around,” another would call out. Yet, another would contribute, “The best side is on the other side.”
Once we had consensus, I let go of the tree and stepped aside to get a good look myself. I thought it was one of my sons. But, they claimed complete innocence. There’s no doubt, someone did yell, “Timber!”
Eager for HIS Return!
